Before buying anything marketed as a mental fog supplement, it is worth ruling out the causes that account for most cases. They cost nothing to test and they resolve a surprising proportion of the problem.
What brain fog is
Not a diagnosis — a description. The sense that thinking is happening through something, that recall is slower and effort higher than it should be.
Notably absent from most descriptions: genuine loss of stored information. Brain fog and forgetfulness feel similar but the fog is mostly a processing and attention problem, which points at different causes than a memory problem would.
How to support focus and concentration: the list, in order of frequency
1. Sleep debt. The most common cause by a wide margin. It does not take an all-nighter — six hours a night for a fortnight produces measurable impairment in people who insist they have adapted. Untreated sleep apnoea is a common hidden version.
2. Dehydration. Mild dehydration measurably affects attention and short-term memory. Most people underestimate how little they have drunk by mid-afternoon, particularly when coffee makes up most of the intake.
3. Blood sugar swings. A high-carbohydrate breakfast producing a spike and crash generates a recognisable mid-morning fog.
4. Medication side effects. Sedating antihistamines, sedatives, some blood pressure drugs, certain bladder medications. If fog started within weeks of a new prescription, that is your first suspect.
5. Depression or anxiety. Both impair concentration and working memory substantially, and people often notice the cognitive symptoms before the mood ones.
6. Thyroid dysfunction or B12 deficiency. Both produce exactly this picture. Both are simple blood tests. Both are treatable.
7. Attention fragmentation. Not medical, but real. Checking a phone every few minutes means sustained attention never establishes, and the resulting state is indistinguishable from a cognitive problem.
Where supplements for brain fog actually fit
Last, and only after the above. Nothing in a capsule fixes sleep debt, resolves a medication side effect or corrects a B12 deficiency — and taking one while any of those remains in place mostly guarantees disappointment.
If you have worked through the list and what remains is a persistent low-grade thing rather than an acute problem, daily antioxidant and circulatory support is a reasonable addition. Expect gradual and subtle, measured in months.
The thing most people skip
Write down when the fog is worst for one week: time of day, what you had eaten, how you had slept, what you had been doing for the previous hour.
Patterns emerge quickly and they are usually more useful than any product. A fog reliably at 3pm on days you skipped lunch has already told you what to do about it.
When to stop self-managing
If fog appeared suddenly, is worsening steadily, or comes with other neurological symptoms, skip all of the above and see a doctor. Sudden onset is a different situation from gradual onset, and it is not a supplement question.
